Clinics and workshops that help you hone technique, improve performance, avoid injury and more


RACE-MANIA clinics, workshops and information sessions are designed to provide hands-on guidance and instruction with a favorable athlete to instructor ratio to maximize the learning opportunity for athletes. Class sizes are limited so registration is required for each clinic or workshop you wish to participate in.

SWIM SMOOTH CLINIC

This is a 3-hour SwimSmooth clinic led by certified SwimSmooth coach Peter Russo that includes swimming in the BU Fit Rec pool (with video taping of your stroke), classroom-based instruction and additional drill time in the pool. This clinic is ideal for swimmers of all levels including triathletes and swimmers who race freestyle in the open water or pool. Swim Smooth is the world’s leading swimming coaching company, offering swimmers of all levels practical straightforward steps help you improve your swimming.

About the Instructor: This SwimSmooth clinic will be led by SwimSmooth certified coach Peter Russo of Russo Racing. Peter has been coaching and teaching athletes for more than 15 years. In addition to being a fully certified SwimSmooth coach, he is a US Masters Swim Coach (Level 2), a USAT Coach (Level 1), Training Peaks Coach (Level 2) and an Ironman certified coach.

ADVANCED FREESTYLE SWIM CLINIC: MAXIMIZING THE SPEED EQUATION

This pool-based clinic is geared toward average to above average swimmers who are looking to get faster in the pool and in open water. This clinic will be led by Sue Sotir, a member of the coaching staff at Breakthrough Performance Coaching (BPC), who will evaluate the swim stroke of each clinic participant and then identify technique refinements designed to help you get more out of each stroke your take.

About the Instructor: This clinic will be led by Sue Sotir, a member of the Breakthrough Performance Coaching team. Sue has a PhD in Physical Education with a concentration in Sport and Exercise Psychology and is a USA Triathlon: Level II Certified Coach, a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and has nearly 30 years of experience in sport, coaching, and education.

CHI RUNNING

ADVANCES IN POWER TRAINING: A WORKSHOP WITH HUNTER ALLEN

Widely known as one of the top experts in the world in coaching endurance athletes using power meters, Hunter Allen’s goal has always been to teach athletes how to maximize their training and racing potential through professional analysis of their power data. Sign up for this 90-minute workshop led by Hunter, head of Peaks Cycling Group the Official Cycling Coach of RACE-MANIA 2019,  to learn the basic principles of power training, the significance of functional reserve capacity and left/right power and how to train using the new targets for short durations.

FAT BURNING WITH METABOLIC EFFICIENCY TRAINING: AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE KETO DIET

There are known benefits to improving the level of fat adaptation for endurance athletes, but do you have to follow a Keto diet to reap these benefits? This presentation will highlight the background, science, and dietary strategies of Metabolic Efficiency Training to show alternative approaches to using the Keto diet to burn fat as a fuel source. Case studies will also be presented to showcase some real life athlete scenarios. Attendees will learn:

  • What “fat burning” is and how Metabolic Efficiency Training (MET) varies from a Keto Diet.
  • Nutrition strategies of MET and some takeaways to implement immediately with your own nutrition patterns.
  • How physiology testing can be used to assess an athlete’s level of fat burning abilities and how the data can be used to implement appropriate nutrition strategies to support health, fitness, and competition goals.

About the Instructors: This workshop will be led by Dina Griffin and Caroline Kavanagh. Dina is owner and founder of The Nutrition Mechanic, based out of Boulder, Colorado. She is also a Board Certified Sport Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and Certified Level II Metabolic Efficiency Training Specialist. Caroline is the owner and founder of InsideOut Human Performance based out of Westford, Massachusetts. She is a Certified Level II Metabolic Efficiency Training Specialist and Certified Specialist in Fitness Nutrition with International Sports Science Association.

MAKING THE JUMP FROM SHORT COURSE TO LONG COURSE TRIATHLON

If 2019 is the year you make the jump from short course triathlon (Sprint & Olympic distance tris) to longer races (70.3 or Iron-distance tris), this workshop is here to help. Led by USAT and Ironman Certified Coach Kristen Lamb of Breakthrough Performance Coaching, this workshop will help you understand what it takes to successfully train for a long distance triathlon.  Kristen will present 7 key components for your success including equipment, consistency, pacing, fueling, mindset, strength and recovery. Attendees will learn:

  • What the commitment really looks like to go from short to long course triathlon.
  • Projected finish times based on pacing for swim, bike and run.
  • How to choose the race that’s right for you (or prepare for the one you’ve already picked!)

About the Instructor: Kristen Lamb is an Ironman and USAT certified coach with Breakthrough Performance Coaching (BPC) and manages the BPC Ride Studio in Salem, MA. She is a 6x Ironman finisher including an Ironman World Championship finish in Kona, HI. She  has competed in triathlons of various distances including two Age Group World Championships in Auckland New Zealand and London with Team USA and has experience working with triathletes from sprint to full distance triathlons.
