Clinics, workshops and workouts that help you hone technique, improve performance, avoid injury and more

RACE-MANIA online registration closes Sat, 3/25/17, at 6pm EST. You must register by then to be eligible to win the Grand Prize RaceQuest Travel training camp trip to Costa Rica. Walk-up registrations will be accepted event day, Sun, 3/26/17, starting at 8:30am ($7 per adult; $10 for 2 adults; age 18 and under are free); admission after 2pm is free to all.

RACE-MANIA (formerly TRI-MANIA) clinics, workshops and workouts are designed to provide hands-on guidance and instruction with a favorable athlete to instructor ratio to maximize the learning opportunity for athletes. Class sizes are limited so registration is required for each clinic or workshop you wish to participate in.

The following clinics and workshops require a fee to attend, but you can SAVE $10 on any of them and unlock other great benefits when you first register for the ALL DAY PASS to RACE-MANIA.

ChiRunning combines the inner focus and flow of Tai Chi with the power and energy of running to create a revolutionary running form and philosophy that takes the pounding, pain and potential damage out of the sport of running. RACE-MANIA attendees may choose from a ChiRunning Level I or Level II clinic options.

The Stroke Correction and Swim Analysis Clinic presented by E3 Training Solutions (with video analysis)
This is a comprehensive 4-hour clinic based in the pool and in the classroom aimed at improving your freestyle swimming and includes a comprehensive individual video analysis. This clinic will be limited to 15 participants and supported by 3-4 coaches from the E3 Training Solutions staff.  All clinic participants will receive an E3 Training Solutions water bottle plus a USB flash drive that will include the following:

  • Raw video file of your swim analysis from various angles above and under water
  • Personalized video analysis (mp4 file) with specific notes addressing YOUR individual needs
  • Multiple PDF guides and video links to swim drills designed to improve your stroke
  • Your swim type and a personal plan to work on your stroke
  • List of swim tools you may need based on your video analysis and where to find those

Total Immersion Super-Efficient Freestyle Fundamentals
In this 75-minute clinic, you’ll learn the fundamentals of a super-efficient freestyle. By the conclusion of the clinic, Total Immersion guarantees you’ll swim with significantly more ease and comfort—and have the foundation for years of continuous improvement.

Price: $75; Duration: 75 minutes; Times Offered on Sunday, 3/26/17: 7:15am and 10:00am. NOTE: For 2017 we will offer BONUS Total Immersion clinic options on Saturday, 3/25/17, the day before RACE-MANIA. These bonus sessions will also be at the BU Fit Rec Center at 12:oopm and 1:30pm.




Metabolic Efficiency Training: Teaching Your Body to Burn More Fat (with Bob Seebohar)
Metabolic efficiency (ME) training is the process of improving the body’s ability to burn fat and Bob Seebohar literally wrote the book.  Bob is one of the first Board Certified Specialists in Sports Dietetics and a Sport Dietitian for the United States Olympic Committee. He is one of the foremost experts on nutrition for endurance athletes and his book “Metabolic Efficiency: Teaching Your Body to Burn More Fat” was originally published in 2009. In this 90 minute workshop, attendees will learn:

  • The dietary strategies needed to improve their body’s ability to use fat as fuel
  • The concept of Nutrition Periodization
  • How to properly periodize nutrition to account for your training cycle and body weight/composition goals.

The First-Time Triathlete Workshop

If 2017 is the year you take the plunge into the great sport of triathlon this is a workshop that will help make your first experience in the sport a great one.  From an overview of “Triathlon 101” to knowing what equipment you need (and DON’T need) to basic training and nutrition tips and more you’ll come away confident and ready enjoy the experience.

An Elite Ultra Runner’s Guide to High Performance Racing and Living 

Mike Wardian is one of the most accomplished marathoners and ultra marathoners in the world. In addition to a lengthy list of podium finishes at marathons, half-marathons, 50k /100k and 100 Mile races, Mike has set world records for the fastest marathon and 50K on an indoor 200-meter track dressed as Elvis. He’s run Badwater, he’s run multiple marathons in a day, he’s a 3x competitor at the US Olympic trials. I could go on.

In this entertaining and enlightening 60 minute session Mike will share how he’s able to train and race as frequently as he does and as well as he does while balancing the demands of a family, a job and life in general. You may not want to take on 135 miles in Death Valley in July, but you’ll learn some valuable lessons from an elite runner who continues to perform at a high level and have fun doing it.

Strength and Conditioning Fundamentals for Runners and Triathletes

This clinic is geared towards runners and triathletes to teach them the benefits of strength training and how easy it can be to fit it into training. With high injury rates in both running and triathlon training, it is our goal to teach athletes the tools necessary to limit their exposure to overuse injuries. We provide an interactive environment for athletes to learn proper lifting techniques and how to appropriately program it into their routine. Additionally, we demonstrate how to calculate important data regarding their cadence and its seamless integration into their runs.

Created and led by Dr. Jordan Metzl, renowned sports medicine physician, best selling author of The Exercise Cure, The Athlete’s Book of Home Remedies and Dr. Jordan Metzl’s Workour Prescription, 31x marathon runner and 12x Ironman triathlete, Ironstrength teaches athletes of all ages how to build strength and reduce the aches and pains of every day life in the process. Overcoming Your Fear of Swimming 

Everyone has fear about something but when your fear keeps you from enjoying everything you’re working to achieve, it’s time to confront that FEAR. Learn how to recognize and address fears you have about pool or open water swimming and how to work past the fear to free yourself and excel in the water.  In this 60 minute classroom-based workshop led by USA Swimming certified coach and founder of Winning Swimming, Carolanne Caron, attendees will learn:

  • How to identify what’s behind your fear of swimming
  • Coping techniques to move past the fear
  • How to make your mind work for you instead of against you

Feet First: Improve your Performance with Active Mobilization of Calves and Feet 
In this workshop attendees will learn how to assess your underlying foot and lower leg mobility and stability patterns to identify restrictions that can negatively impact your power production in swimming, cycling and running.  Attendees will then learn how fix these restrictions using a combination of active mobilization techniques that focus on trigger point release, dynamic fascial stretching and muscular re-patterning exercises.

Race for Good Clinic presented by Race Guards

The Race Guards “Race for Good Clinic” will provide endurance athletes at all levels of experience valuable training, recovery and injury prevention tips. Attendees will also be trained in Hands Only CPR and learn about the Race Guards in-race first aid program.

Tri Bike Fit 101

A triathlon bike is not a road bike for good reason. From aerodynamics to muscular performance, a proper bike fit that puts your needs as an individual athlete first is the number one equipment based performance and comfort variable that affects your bike split. In this workshop led by Ian Buchanan, founder of Fit Werx, Rider First Bike Fitting, Rider Matched Bike Sales, Ian will discuss bike fit variables that affect all types of riding and then drill deeper on how and why an aerobar specific triathlon position is unique and how to achieve and develop a good aero position.

The Boston Marathon: Tapering Tip with the Coach, Q&A with the RD featuring Dave McGillivray

If you are running in the 2017 Boston Marathon, the date of RACE-MANIA most likely coincides with you and fellow runners coming off your last long run… that means it’s time to taper! Join us for this session where you’ll get tapering tips from coach Scott Carrier of Breakthrough Performance Coaching (BPC) and have a unique opportunity to ask Boston Marathon Race Director and endurance legend Dave McGillivray anything you ever wanted to know about this iconic race.

Yoga and Mobility for a Better Triathlon Bike Fit

This workshop will focus on flexibility and strength to get comfortable in an aerodynamic triathlon bike position. Led by triathlete and yoga instructor Steve Matava, attendees will use yoga poses and mobility work to increase range of motion in the hamstrings, hips, and back. Attendees will also use yoga poses and simple weight training to strengthen the core to allow the body to stay in the aero position for extended periods of time. Finally, the class will include a discussion of the basics of triathlon bike fit and aerodynamics which will inform the principles of the workshop.

Mark Allen’s Running Specifics: Target Training for a Great Triathlon Run — SOLD OUT

In this 60-minute workshop, 6x IRONMAN Triathlon World Champion and IRONMAN University Master Coach Mark Allen will detail the specifics of how to become a great runner in triathlons. Mark Allen will highlight some of the myths about what that takes and their potential for injury and burnout as well as provide training advice that really works to improve your run in a triathlon. He will also explain why a great run in a triathlon is not just about running and how you can use cycling and swimming to improve your race run.

Road Rage and Your Group Ride: What is Safe, Courteous and Legal

Many believe bike advocacy is limited to cities. But increasingly suburban and rural communities have been the scenes of hostility, aggression and even violence between bicyclists and motorists. The group ride, when poorly led, is often the source of road rage, questionable enforcement, angry media comments and even public policy against bikes. Most of these situations can be avoided with some simple group ride leadership techniques developed and honed by European clubs. Attend this talk led by Richard Fries, Executive Director, MassBike, and learn how effective these techniques can be.
